Judge summary

Judge-facing facts

  • Trap Card.
  • Can be activated at the end of the Battle Phase (End Step) of either player's turn.
  • Activating this card from the hand when you control no cards is an activation condition, not an effect.
  • You must count Evenly Matched itself when determining the number of cards you control at activation. If you activate it from your hand while controlling no other cards, you control 1 card.
  • The effect forces the opponent player to banish cards; it does not affect monsters. Monsters unaffected by Trap effects will still be banished face-down.
  • Tokens cannot be banished face-down. If the opponent controls only Tokens, this card cannot be activated.

Card-specific notes from database

  • (YGOResources) If you control no cards and your opponent controls exactly 1 card, you cannot activate Evenly Matched from your hand, because you will control 1 card (Evenly Matched) upon activation, meaning your opponent does not control more cards than you.
  • (YGOResources) If your opponent controls Tokens and other cards, they must choose to banish the non-Token cards face-down.
  • (YGOResources) If you control a card that prevents the opponent from banishing (e.g., Chaos Hunter), you cannot activate Evenly Matched. If your opponent controls Chaos Hunter, you can still activate it.
  • (Konami neuron) Monsters that 'cannot be banished by card effects' (e.g., Metaphys Executor) can be banished by Evenly Matched, as the banishing is performed by the player.
  • (Konami neuron) If a monster that is banished when it leaves the field (e.g., Floowandereeze x Robina, Plaguespreader Zombie) is chosen to be banished by Evenly Matched, it is banished face-up instead.
  • (Konami neuron) Transaction Rollback cannot copy Evenly Matched except at the end of the Battle Phase, because the activation condition must be met.
